AlphaProof: DeepMind's AI Solves Four IMO 2024 Problems, Nears Mathematical Milestone

Their AI system, AlphaProof, has successfully solved four out of six problems from the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Bath, UK. Despite the current progress, DeepMind’s systems need further refinement to meet the prize's strict criteria, such as open-sourcing code and operating within limited computing power.

Reinforcement Learning and Language Models

AlphaProof's success lies in its unique approach, combining reinforcement learning with language models. Utilizing the AlphaZero engine, which has excelled in games like Go, the system was trained to read and write proofs in a formal language called Lean. This method allowed AlphaProof to validate its outputs through the Lean software, enhancing its proof-solving accuracy.

Overcoming Data Limitations

Training an AI to solve complex mathematical problems requires substantial data. However, the limited availability of mathematical proofs in Lean posed a challenge. DeepMind tackled this by developing a network to translate natural language problems into Lean, enabling AlphaProof to undergo reinforcement-learning cycles. Despite some translations being nonsensical, the approach proved effective, advancing the AI’s problem-solving capabilities.

While AlphaProof has shown impressive results, extending its capabilities to research-level mathematics remains a challenge. David Silver, a leading researcher at DeepMind, emphasized that the AI can now solve problems challenging to the best young mathematicians but has yet to tackle open research problems.
