According to findings from UIUC, nearly 18 million Americans fall victim to phone scams every year, resulting in estimated losses of $40 billion. The newly developed AI agents, powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o model, utilize real-time voice capabilities to mimic human conversation, providing convincing interactions that can successfully mislead victims. By responding to audio prompts and navigating intricate scenarios, these agents raise the bar for scam operations.

The research revealed that these AI-driven scams are economically viable, costing as little as $0.75 per successful attempt. This lowered cost barrier makes these scams highly accessible to perpetrators, which is a worrying trend. Experiments conducted by the research team included simulations of common scams, such as cryptocurrency transfers, gift card fraud, and the theft of personal credentials.

These AI agents demonstrated an overall success rate of 36%, with many unsuccessful attempts resulting from transcription errors rather than faults in the scam agents themselves. The simplicity of the technology, developed in just 1,051 lines of code, points to how easily such dangerous tools can be replicated.

The agents could perform sophisticated scams that require completing multiple steps, such as navigating websites and even handling two-factor authentication. For example, a bank transfer scam involving impersonation of a legitimate financial institution required up to 26 individual actions and took around three minutes to execute. Such complexity, combined with coherent conversation abilities, makes these AI agents a powerful tool for scammers.

By using a jailbreaking prompt, the agents can bypass certain safeguards, making them especially dangerous in impersonation scenarios.
